I learn something new every day. Recently, I received a packet in the mail educating me about the antioxidant power found in common herbs and spices. I know a lot about food and nutrition, but this one caught me by surprise, so I thought I would share my new-found knowledge.
Generally, foods like fruits and vegetables are the most powerful sources of antioxidants. You may have heard blueberries or pomegranate juice called “super foods” because of their antioxidant power. Dried herbs and spices are unique because they are such a concentrated source of antioxidants.
Antioxidants are important for health because it appears they can boost the immune system and reduce inflammation. Inflammation in the body can be a first step in the development of many diseases including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, so it would be ideal to prevent or reduce inflammation.
There is ongoing research in the area of the antioxidant content and benefits of herbs and spices. No definite conclusions have been reached yet, but some early research is suggesting that the antioxidant power of herbs and spices may reduce inflammation, curb hunger, and boost metabolism.*
Until there is hard evidence for the health benefits of herbs and spices, it’s still beneficial to your health to include them in your diet. Herbs and spices enhance the flavor of foods, so you may be able to use less salt, fat or sugar when cooking. They also can improve the taste of nutritious foods like vegetables. Better tasting vegetables, means you might get closer to reaching your daily veggie goal too!
You might be wondering, which herbs and spices top the list of antioxidant power. One teaspoon of cinnamon has more antioxidant power than 1 cup of pomegranate juice or a half cup of blueberries or cranberries.* Other herbs and spices rich in antioxidants include yellow curry (tumeric), red pepper, ginger, oregano, rosemary, and thyme.
Experiment with different herbs and spices. It’s good for your health and can open you up to a new world of flavor.
