Walking is a fun and healthy exercise — and it’s a great way to get heart-healthy cardio while burning fat and calories. To be healthy and active you need to walk about 10,000 steps each day (equivalent to approximately five miles). Want to lose a few extra pounds? Just step up the amount of walking.

Whatever your goals, a pedometer is an easy way to keep track of your steps and get you on the road to success. Get one for each member of the family and make a game to see who walks the farthest each day!

Tips for Buying a Pedometer

Pick out the right pedometers for you and your family by considering these features in addition to price:

  1. How you wear the pedometer. Usually a pedometer is worn on your belt, but some can still track every step from your pocket or your purse. Most pedometers include a security strap to attach to clothing to prevent you from losing it.
  2. >Size and weight of pedometer. Where you plan to wear your pedometer will determine the size you want. Most of them weigh only a few ounces.
  3. Ease of use. Consider the size of a pedometer’s display screen and the ease of reading results. Also note that some pedometers automatically reset at midnight so you’re ready to go each morning, while others require you to manually reset them. Keep in mind you’ll need to change the batteries from time to time, so make sure it’s an easy process.
  4. Beyond counting steps. In addition to the number of steps you’ve taken, many pedometers track the distance in miles, the amount of time you’ve been active and the quantity of calories burned. Some will also delineate between steps and aerobic steps.
  5. Memory function. More advanced pedometers include a memory function to save your accomplishments.
