Let’s face it, getting back in shape can be a challenge. Thankfully, dressing for the gym is now easier than ever. Ditch the slouchy tees and baggy sweats and go for workout clothes that will flatter your figure as you get back in shape. Here are some tips on choosing the right fitness apparel for your body type.
Elongate a small frame with slim-fit yoga pants that skim the hips and thighs and flare slightly below the knees. Full-length pants are almost always a better bet than capris or cropped styles, because the full length extends the line of your legs. If you’re petite plus, opt for sleek compression tops and bottoms made with extra spandex for slimming support.
Go for stretchy, fitted tops, jackets and pants in compression fabrics. Not only will you be more comfortable, you’ll look slimmer and feel more supported. When choosing pants, look for wide-leg or bootcut styles with hidden support panels around the middle. Remember that spandex is your friend – it smoothes and adds support.
Make your middle little with compression tops and pants made with double-layer fabrics. They’ll hold you in. Pick pants with higher-rise panels for extra control.
If you’re big-busted—we’re talking about a D cup or higher—you need a good, supportive sports bra. If you’ve worn two (or three) sports bras at once in order to work out comfortably, this is for you. Here’s what to look for when shopping for a sports bra: encapsulation/compression combination styles with wide, cushioned straps to evenly redistribute weight, and wider rib bands to secure the bra. Look for fitness tops and tanks in compression fabrics and slimming solid colors. Choose v-necks styles over crew or scoop necklines. Skip the tops with “built-in” bras—they won’t offer you enough support.
Carefully placed blocks of color can be just as slimming as all black. Look for active separates that feature colorblocking. Contrasting patterns or lines of color – especially vertical lines – help you appear longer and leaner. Plus, color is an instant mood booster!
